Several kinds of both thanks and apologies are distinguished, and it is demonstrated that the values and norms of a given speech community have a bearing on whether or not they are to be considered related activities. Theoretically this study is grounded in contrastive pragmatics. It draws on materials of some European languages as well as Japanese.
