Annotation

First C. explains along Gricean lines what he calls pre-conventional meaning. Then David Lewis' account of conventions is introduced to show how pre-conventional cases could lead to the establishment of conventional meaning. The author then gives a 're-writing' of this account, in the light of some very fundamental criticisms.
