B. sets out to provide a comprehensive theory of markedness (M) and naturalness (N) grounded on Peircean semiotics, and to find it instantiated in actual discourse. Advocating a processual view of discourse, B. shows that M and N can exist at different levels of language, discourse and semiotics, whilst calling for attention to the problem of semiotic generalizations.
