This volume on sociolinguistics and the ethnography of speaking comprises nine chapters. An introductory chapter outlines a framework for language-centered social history, and discusses many core concepts. The eight following essays cover diverse items such as insults and the language of medicine, whilst the case-studies that run from the Middle Ages to the 20th century are restricted to England, France, Italy and New Zealand.
