Cook-Gumperz, Jenny, ed. 1986. The social construction of literacy. Cambridge University Press. x + 248 pp.
Book – edited volume
The contributors to this volume deal with questions that are central to literacy acquisition. Critically analyzing the western view of a 'literate' person, the authors propose a new approach to literary acquisition, considering it as a social skill, whereby children must learn socially 'approved' discourse strategies.
