This collection of papers results from a session on codeswitching in the context of the XIth World Congress of Sociology (New Delhi, 1986). There are three main sections: linguistic structure and communicative needs; the sociolinguistics of language switching; and analysis of mixed discourse. The volume is intended as a state-of-the-art of the research on code-switching, providing data from various disciplines and perspectives and concerning different regions.
