Annotation
This monograph emphasizes that the linguistic study of Japanese requires an analysis of the social dimension of the language. It is divided into four chapters, which respecively deal with: Japanese sociolinguistics with special reference to the Western research; the ethnography of ritual and address at a wedding reception; speaking of giving: the pragmatics of Japanese donatory verbs; and cross-cultural contrast.
