This paper offers some hypotheses on the possible role of conversational maxims and principles in interactions involving aphasics, using the Gricean maxims and Allwood's principles in combination with general cognitive and ethical considerations. Observed characteristics as compensatory politeness strategies, over-interpretation and strong reliance on inductions from context and background information as well as an uncertain linguistic basis increase the risk of non-understanding.
