This paper investigates Peruvian Spanish speakers' strategies in request/response speech events, using Blum-Kulka et al.'s model (1989), distinguishing between head acts and assisting moves, and Brown and Levinson's (1978) framework of politeness strategies. It is demonstrated that in requests, both men and women prefer the expression of respect over companionship, whilst the opposite holds for responses.
