Investigating evaluation strategies in newspaper reports on the 1986 presidential election campaign in Austria, this paper distinguishes between direct and reported evaluative utterances, the latter subdivided according to structural, textual and pragmatic properties. It is argued that the evaluative effect of the utterances is a result of both the expressed evaluation and the readers's knowledge and beliefs.
