Dealing with a stereotype about miscommunication between New Zealanders of European and Polynesian origin, i.e. the ambiguous yes and no in response to negative questions, demonstrated via courtroom data, this article reveals that an explanation has to go beyond first versus second language differences, and take into account the socio-cultural context, performance factors and psycholinguistic processes.
