After confronting two types of computer simulation (CS) of mental process, the 'classical' artificial intelligence based on serial processing and symbol manipulation and the 'neural network' approach based on connections that determine input-output relations, it is argued that no matter how far CS proceeds, it cannot ground full understanding, given the inherent discrepancy between the status attributed to a human subject and to a computer process.
