This paper examines crosscultural variation in academic English and Polish discourse in the field of language studies, especially strategies of paper introduction, paying attention to scope, pattern and mode of information. Differences involve the scope of information revealed in initiating a paper and the kind of meta-language preferred in various academic styles.
