Annotation

Using an integrated discourse framework, this paper compares native and non-native English discourse to highlight the effect of particular patterns of lexical repetition on text coherence. Lexical repetition appears to provide context-related definitions of words and phrases and a discourse-specific synonym set, whilst its absence contributes to the perception of incoherence in the examined non-native discourse.
