This paper offers a survey of recent research and a classification of metaphoric and diagrammatic iconicity in language, discussing problems of grammatical, conventional and poetic metaphor and of structural and relational diagram. The evaluation of the property of linguistic iconicity clearly has implications for the theory of language as a 'natural' phenomenon.
