This paper examines iconicity in relation to the language change phenomenon of auxiliation, i.e. the development of regular, lexical verb structures into grammaticalized auxiliary verb constructions. Of all verb grammatical morphemes auxiliary grams appear to present the clearest case of metaphoric-metonymic iconicity.
