The study of manifestations of iconicity in colloquial Russian demonstrates that the speaker's perception of interlocutor distance is encoded in the language, resulting either in a 'grammar of restraint' -favored by men- or in a 'grammar of closeness' -favored by women-, classified either as a sub- and a superstructure or as two different subgrammars.
