This paper examines the hitherto uncharted use of WELL with utterances that have no bearing on previous conversational moves, such as television snooker commentaries. WELL occurs with commentaries which address the positional consequences of an error in the play or a positional problem of apparent concern and with commentaries which remark upon an unexpected observation or a surprisingly good shot. An alternative account for the use of WELL is then proposed, based on the above analysis and further discussion of previous accounts.
