This English grammar book aimed at a heterogenous audience, considers language as designed for communication and forever changing, deals with both intra- and extra-sentential information and adds a discourse level analysis to conventional semantic and syntactic analyses, whilst a few themes inform G.'s accounts throughout the book, such as the insufficiency of logico-semantic accounts, the isomorphism between grammar and function and the non-binary analysis that should be assigned to natural language forms.
