This paper examines and compares adjudication and mediation as social and institutional activities and processes employed in conflict or dispute resolution, analyzing texts from Australian courts and divorce mediation. The degree of authoritative intervention, the kinds of (in)directness expressed and the variety and range of intervention are shown to distinguish judicial from mediatory discourse.
