It is argued that observed Chinese/English bilingual families in Tyneside deploy code-switching as a conversational resource to help them contextualize preference organization and repairs. Some of the code-switching patterns appear to be specific to generational subgroups, and their strategic use is compared with wider intergenerational patterns of language choice and language competence within the community. .
