Annotation

This paper both seeks to extend and constrain the model of crosscultural miscommunication via pronominal analysis of American-Soviet spacebridge speech events. On the one hand, it is demonstrated that variation in speakers' uses of lexical features can also cause crosstalk and the explanation of crosstalk is enhanced by showing that much crosstalk is in fact a motivated communicative strategy. On the other hand it is demonstrated that characterization of 'American' and 'Soviet' speech styles has to be constrained to specific speech activities or events, thus supporting the view of crosscultural variation.
