Annotation

This study analyzes face-threatening acts implemented in joking, effected either on-record, redressed, or off-record. When redressed, the FTA can violate the speaker's or hearer's positive or negative face within the reference frame of negative or positive politeness. Further discussion deals with strategic advantages of the speaker over the hearer and advantages of self-denigrating humor.
