Annotation

This volume examines the influence of Locke's theory of signs on the dominant Enlightenment and early 19th-century views on language and politics. Chapter I mainly focuses on French empiricism, investigating the connection between signs and experience. Chapter II chiefly deals with Italian political philosophy, Italian language theories and the political power of language. Chapter III describes the transition to Idealism in language philosophy and linguistic transcendentalism in classical German philosophy.
