This paper offers an account of the notion of abduction in Peirce's theory of signs, and compares it with Hofstadter's subcognition model, Derrida's differance and dehiscence-principles and Halliday's view of language as particle, wave and field. It is argued that abduction could play a primary role in developing a linguistics of indeterminacy.
