This study explores the functions of topic-encoding zero-marked phrases, i.e. marking minor discourse boundaries and representing entities which play a secondary role in discourse, in relation to other topic-encoding expressions as wa-marked phrases and zero anaphora, which respectively mark major discourse boundaries and discourse continuity on the one hand, and both refer to central discourse entities on the other.
