This article critically reexamines the framework of Brown and Levinson's politeness theory and its application in the treatment of politeness phenomena. An alternative, broader view of politeness, defined as appropriateness, is offered and a new approach to the study of Repair Work which incorporates the notion of interactional speech within a framework of social interaction.
