This paper attempts to provide an integrated framework for genre analysis that incorporates social and cognitive aspects of language production and comprehension. It is argued that the key to this description, drawing from Fillmore's model of frame semantics, lies in a pragmatic perspective on the notion of genre based on the concepts of prototype, intertextuality and inheritance.
