This paper presents a 'two-domain hypothesis' which views the demonstrative forms in Wambon and Urim as fulfilling the two synchronically unrelated functions of referent identification and expression of topicality distinctions. To explain the formal similarities V. points to a diachronic development as in several Papuan languages topic markers developed from demonstrative operators.
