This volume sets out to provide a new narratology after sorting out and rewriting the linguistics of reported speech and consciousness, drawing on the history of the discussion from Plato onwards, bringing in important German and French linguistic and narratological work and discussing examples drawn from oral and written communication and from different periods of mainly English, French, German and Russian literature.
