Annotation

If the interpretation of metaphors is strongly culturally conditioned, this especially holds for translated metaphor. This paper thus develops three strategies which a translator can apply to adopt a metaphor to a new context, and discusses them in semantic, pragmatic and communicative terms: the use of an exact equivalent of the original metaphor; the use of another metaphorical phrase which expresses a similar sense; the replacement of an untranslatable metaphor with its approximate literal paraphrase.
