Drawing on the Lakoff-Johnson-Turner theory of conceptual metaphor, this article investigates the metaphoric structure of Yeat's poem THE SECOND COMING, arguing that its meaning depends on various conventional center and periphery metaphors which unite to define a cultural ideal of legitimate authority.
