Annotation
This paper explores the functions of direct speech in the non-narrative context of adult numeracy classroom discourse, to illustrate a situated approach to understanding speech reporting. Direct speech functions thus can construct a distinctive evidential claim; serve as a means to structure mathematical reasoning in the classroom dialogically; and may serve as a strategic device to manipulate social distance between discourse participants in contexts where knowledge/power are unequally distributed.
