Annotation

This article examines English Reverse WH, WH and IT cleft constructions in spoken discourse, which appear to fulfill largely complementary focusing functions, to which the thematized, deictic elements THAT/THIS, WH clause and IT are central. Whilst Reverse WH and WH cleft constructions respectively relate to backwards and forwards pointing, IT clefts are neutral in this respect and preferred for expressing overt contrast.
