This article on the functions of self-quotation in Japanese discourse, including direct-style self-quotation and self-representation of thought and direct-style quotative explanation, argues that self-quotation allows for manipulation of multiple voices and manipulation of contexts for creating meaning, suggesting the potentially universal nature of these functions.
