This paper proposes a methodology for seeking out the roots of pragmatics, adopting the definition of pragmatics as 'explicit and essential' mention of the language user. As 'true' pragmatics is unearthed in philosophy (of language of the past), B. tries to account for positive and negative implications of this search for its roots.
