Annotation
This paper discusses factors determining the choice between proper noun and definite common noun phrases (or a hybrid) for referring to individual persons, places and things. This choice is shown to depend both on the standpoint of the speaker and the addressee, on relative generations of speaker, addressee and referent person, and on the speaker's and addressee's relative insider/outsider status in references to persons in families, companies and other social organizations and in references to local places.
