Annotation

This paper demonstrates that the Preferred Argument Structure (PAS), as proposed by Du Bois for the ergative Mayan Sacapultec language, also holds for conversational American English discourse. PAS refers to patterning preferences for the core arguments A, S and O, to structure in a certain way in connected discourse. The hypothesis of an ergative discourse structuring however is not confirmed by the data, presumably given the difference in explored language and genre.
