Annotation

This paper criticizes in theoretical as well as in methodological aspect, Blom and Gumperz' study on code-switching in the Norwegian village of Hemnes, which suggests an absolute dichotomy between the two linguistic entities, - i.e. a local dialect, Ranamal, and a standardized national spoken variety, Bokmal-, pointing them out as the main components in discrete code-switching strategies. This portrayal is shown to be incompatible with any real-life Norwegian situation.
