Extending earlier research, this study examines the simultaneous effects of global, local and previous theme, investigating theoretically and empirically to what extent each factor controls syntactic subject assignment in English narrative discourse. Whilst all three factors significantly affect English subject assignment, local theme is shown the most consistent and powerful explanatory factor.
