This paper constitutes an introduction and welcoming address to the field of 'Conversation Analysis of Foreign Language Data', tracing M.'s meandering academic path from ethnography of Southeast Asia to culturally contexted conversation analysis. For M., the main interest of conversational structures lies in occasional hints about the functioning of the mind and in their use as constant resources and constraints in social interaction.
