This study argues that the potential conversion of the Chinese topic construction into a relative construction crucially depends upon the distinction between the three identified types of pragmatic interpretation of syntactic topic, each characterized by their special thematic structuring: instance, frame and range topic. The syntactic topic doesn't seem to constitute a homogeneous grammatical function in Chinese though.
