Annotation

This paper analyzes the politeness strategies and participation frames for male and female Peruvian Spanish speakers in the role-play situations of reprimanding and responding to a reprimand. The overall findings suggest a preference for solidarity strategies in 'reprimanding' and for deference strategies in 'responding to a reprimand', yet with decided differences between males and females. Whilst men tend to be more authoritative in reprimanding, women rather maintain friendliness, and whilst men are more confrontational in responding to a reprimand, women balance confrontation with acceptance and responsibility. Both male and female older participants and members of the upper middle class are more imposing and more deferential.
