Approaching the study of film from within the poetics of cinema, B. offers an account of all the films of the seminal Soviet filmmaker S. Eisenstein, and places them in the context of Eisenstein's theoretical writings and the history of the Soviet Union under Lenin and Stalin, whilst focusing on Eisenstein's effort to understand film and to discover the ways in which it works.
