Annotation

This paper builds on Labov's conversation analytic insights into narrative, Bakhtin's idea of voicing and Goffman's notion of footing, to analyze three speaker role inhabitances in narratives of personal experience, namely those of author, interlocutor and character. Suggestions are made on how to quantify these role distinctions, which are shown to be salient for listeners, in order to describe the loading of each of the roles in the narrative.
