This book introduces readers to key concepts in conversation analysis drawing on examples of child-adult interaction during family meals and school lessons. The seven chapters respectively deal with: conversation analysis; the mechanisms of turn-taking, including pauses, overlaps and adjacency pairs; adjacency pairs and the preference for agreement; repair and intersubjectivity; the concept of participation; and verbal play and the poetry of everyday speech.
