This study provides a review of literature on the international status of German as a scientific language and an analysis of past and present use of German by scientists throughout the world. It documents the 2Oth century decline in the relative importance of German and other scientific languages before the global rise in the use of English in scientific discourse, and the consequences of this process for scholars and scientists, forced to publish in a 'foreign' language.
