Annotation

This study examines the relationship between computers' success in imitating human language use and their violations of Grice's cooperative principle and conversational maxims, drawing on data from the annual Loebner Prize Contest, a competition in which computers participate in Turing Tests. It is argued that the greatest challenge in developing successful human-machine conversation will be modeling computers' ability to cooperate.
