Annotation

This paper defends the standard view of semantics (SV) against standard objections and on independent grounds, pointing to the failure to distinguish between 'strict' and 'loose' semantics. It is argued that the real problem lies in the simultaneous construction of both a theory of what words mean, independent of any particular context, and a theory of what we can convey via these words in a particular context.
