Annotation

This paper argues that the modern misuse of the word LITERALLY as an expression of speaker commitment marks a natural semantic extension of its basic metalinguistic meaning, a development typical of a large class of intensifiers, though 'literally' itself is still in the early stages of such an evolution. Finally it considers the development of LITERALLY as a case of subjectification in meaning change.
